I've read in my statistics books that the standard deviation for the sampling distribution of the sample mean, x bar, is σ (the population's standard deviation), divided by the square root of n. This is stated without proof or explanation. Of course it makes sense that you'd start with σ and that n would be relevant, but I'd like a little more specificity. Can you give me either a proof or at least an intuitive/motivating explanation as to why the standard deviation for the sampling distribution of the sample mean is σ divided by the square root of n? Thanks.

For a spherical mirror approximating a parabolic mirror, if the object is beyond the center of curvature, i.e., the center of curvature is between the object and the mirror itself, then the image will be real, inverted, and reduced in size; and if the object is as at the center of curvature, the image will be real, the same size as the original, and inverted. I have a few questions: (1) what governs whether the image forms outside the mirror (real) or behind the mirror (virtual)? (2) why does the image invert in these two scenarios? (3) Why is the image smaller to the left of the center and the same size only at the center? Thanks. P.S. Because a spherical surface is easier to form, many focusing mirrors are, in fact, spherical. The slight distortion this causes is called spherical aberration. . . . In the formula to calculate the variance of a population, you divide by N. In the formula to calculate the variance of a sample, you divide by N-1. I understand that using N-1 is called "Bessel's correction" and I've read that using N-1 helps to correct for bias or error. Why is that so? In other words, why is dividing by N-1 more accurate than dividing by N when calculating the variance of a sample? Thanks.

White light goes from air through a glass slab with parallel surfaces. Will its colors be dispersed when it emerges from the glass? I think the answer is no, it will not; because the light will disperse when it passes from the air into the glass, but then the dispersion will be reversed, so to speak, when the light passes from the glass back out into the air. Is this right?
