“Rue Cases Nègres” (Black Shack Alley, or Sugar Cane Alley), which is an award-winning film from Martinique. The film is in French with English subtitles. When writing your film critique, please take note of, and discuss the details of each film in terms of how they connect with the information that you have learned in class. For example, how do the subjects, themes, and topics that you see in the films “tie into” the class lectures and readings? How does the framework of the films match and mirror what is present in the readings and what you have been learning? How are the subjects of the films interconnected and/or differentiated with the knowledge that you are acquiring? Basically, films (when somewhat historically accurate) can be great visual aids to historical and cultural realities and connotations. The films for our course are both great “period pieces” in terms of the Caribbean from a historical and cultural standpoint. Please pay close attention to all of the possible topics below that will appear in each film. Examples of some of the topical details that might be present in each film include (but are not limited to): - Race (from all angles and perspectives) - Class (same as above) - Religion - Labor - Gender - Historical - Situational - Linguistic - Cultural - Age - The presence of “Africa” - The presence of “Europe” - And so forth................... As well as juxtaposing the above topics into what we have been learning so far, I would also like your candid opinions about what you see in the films.
