Today we are going to be talking about the three steps of speciation, so the formation of new species.

The first stage that is needed is what we call separation.

So this is where you have some sort of event, a natural disaster, a change in ecosystem, or something along the lines where a population of organisms that were one connected have some sort of sort of break and split.

So we're going to use this island up here, and the example of these black lines are going to be ants.

And one day a natural disaster occurs, an earthquake in combination with a large rainfall, causes a river to form right down the center of this island, splitting those two, that one species into two separate populations.

From there, what happens when these two populations split, over time they become adjusted to their own separate environments.

And again, this happens over generations and generations.

And as they adjust and change over time, our next step is what we call adaptation.

So that is where because of the different environmental constraints, the different things happening on either in both populations, there's enough changes that causes them to become more different from how they started...
