The Impact of Recent Discoveries on Theories of Hominid Evolution

How far are recent discoveries of human remains changing our understanding of hominid evolution? Over the centuries, archaeologists understanding of hominid evolution has changed remarkably, due to more and more discoveries being made, which lead to different theories as to how and why we developed. One of the original theories as to why the difference in size between males and females shrank is due to the result of change from being herbivores to becoming omnivores. Evidence of cut marks on animal bones suggests that human beings had mastered eating meat by 1.8 million years ago. It is believed that as there became more food to go around, females began to catch up with males in size. However, this is highly disputed by many archaeologists, including Richard Wrangham, who believes that at the beginning of hominid evolution, we were in fact scavengers. This hunter vs scavenger debate is just one of many which have puzzled archaeologists for decades. Archaeologist Richard Wrangham believes that, due to new conflicting evidence, meat eating is completely irrelevant to brain size, and argues that modern omnivores eat meat with no increase in brain size at all. He also uses ethnoarchaeology to support his argument. A hunter belonging to the Hadza tribe of Tanzania might catch one large animal a month, but can go weeks without a kill, even with their modern technology. Therefore, it wouldn't have been possible for the Homo erectus to feed their family purely on meat. Wrangham therefore believes that there must have been another food source, which he concludes to be tubers. Tubers are capable of providing the energy that may well have resulted in the growth of brains. Other tuber- eating animals such as pigs also thrived in Africa around the same time. Fossil Mole rats, who's diet is mainly tubers, have been found among hominid remains from 2 million years ago. Wrangham also observed that chimps currently dig fown at an arms lenth in order to reach the root of a particular vine. From this, he believes that Australopithecus may well have done the same thing. From this, he also has a theory as to why the difference between the size of males and females decreases. Eventually, it was realised that cooking tubers made them easier to digest. Males therefore used to wait until the tubers were cooked, and then steal the food. The females therefore would use their sexual attractiveness in order to recruit the best males to protect the food. Due to the increased chances for mating, there was less rivalry between the males, so there was no need to get larger. However, the females got larger body sizes in order to produce and nourish babies and to also to fend off stealing. Richard Wrangham's theory is a clear example of how beliefs about hominid evolution can change due to new discoveries and theories.
