The Social Network Movie Analysis
Our world gets more accessible and easier to live in as technology advances. With only a
few keystrokes, we may communicate with family members across the ocean and send messages
as well as create letters via email that are instantly delivered to our friends and family's inboxes.
As a result, people can communicate with each other now more instantly, quickly, and more
accessible than ever before. Ironically, the ease of communication between people may have also
reduced disconnect. According to experts, communicating via Facebook, Instagram, or Google
email undermines our ability to understand one another in person and hurts our social
connections. We observed several ways the main character, Mark Zuckerberg, fails to
communicate and understand his friends.
Mark Zuckerberg, and his then-girlfriend, Erica Albright, have a communication
breakdown early in the movie. Initial thoughts were that Mark and Erica were dating while
watching the movie and weren't committed to one another. However, as their conversation
progresses, the audience not only becomes aware of Mark's poor communication abilities but
also discovers that Erica is, in fact, his girlfriend. We can observe Mark speaking and how he
bounced from subject to subject and back to earlier topics with ease. However, as we can see
from Erica's bewildered expression, this can be incredibly perplexing for many individuals. This
scene is just the tip of the iceberg regarding Mark's poor communication abilities
and misconceptions. Not only does he struggle to connect and communicate effectively with his
girlfriend, who he has likely known for months, but he also struggles to understand her body
language and facial expressions, which are crucial components of interaction and
communication.
From listening to their discussion, initial thoughts are that Erica was angry at Mark's
patronizing words. For instance, he disparaged her education at Boston University or argued she
wouldn't meet the individuals he brought her to on her own because she just did not fit in that
group, much like Mark felt he did. In addition, it was remarkable how out of touch Mark was
with not just the emotions and feelings of his girlfriend but also with people in general. This
moment particularly emphasized Mark's self-centered attitude and lack of connection to
people and highlighted how he thinks above the typical level of human reasoning. Thus, it was
an essential scene in the movie.
The second case of poor communication was demonstrated by Mark's email
communications between Diva Narendra and Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. Mark attracted a
lot of attention from his classmates, generally negative, as he angrily made the website Facemash
to avenge Erica's breakup. But Harvard upperclassmen Cameron, Tyler, and Diva discover about
Mark through their school newspaper. The group asks Mark for assistance in creating the
Harvard Connection website they have been working on for the past few months. Mark accepts
and starts working on the website with little to no hesitation.
