Talk to a teacher who has a child with challenging behavior in her class about working with the family. What are some of her attitudes? Has she been successful in creating a positive relationship? How? If she hasn't managed to develop a sense of teamwork, what might have played a part in the family's position?

Problem 3

Practice listening with a partner. Listen hard, without interrupting while your partner talks for 3 to 5 minutes about a time when she was angry or frustrated, describing what upset her and how she dealt with it. Then reverse roles. When you're both finished, discuss how you felt being listened to, how difficult it was not to interrupt, and what (if anything) shattered your concentration

Problem 4

With a classmate, role-play a parent-teacher meeting with one person being the teacher and the other the parent of a child with challenging behavior. Evaluate the meeting. What were some of the difficulties for the teacher? For the parent? How did you deal with the parent's response? What would you do differently? Conduct a follow-up meeting to iron out some of the problems that arose.

Problem 5

Many organizations help children with challenging behavior and their families. Compile a list of resources in your neighborhood, describe what they do, get the contact information for someone at each place, and collect a brochure or other written information useful to a family.
