1 ) Do you think nonhuman primates should be kept in zoos? Why or why not? 2) With some nonhuman primates (e.g. Western Lowland Gorilla) being critically endangered through hunting, war, or loss of habitat, do you think the endangered nonhuman primates are better off in zoos? Should we then continue breeding programs for these primates for continued existence in zoos?

There have been varied attempts as species conservation, some more successful than others. Zoos have played an important part as a source of new individuals to release to the wild. There are, however, several problems with this. Research the issues related to species conservation and present one problem that you find with the "zoo model" of species conservation. Then, discuss whether we should be focusing on habitat preservation or species preservation.

The mission statement of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is to: "help its members and the animals in their care thrive by providing services advancing animal welfare, public engagement and the conservation of wildlife." What is your stance on the role of zoos in the future? Will they exist as they are, change, or cease to exist? If they continue on, what should their role be? How should they be funded? Support your position with evidence.
