An ion chromatography experiment was done to separate the following anions using a Dionex system: Fluoride, Chloride, Sulfate, Nitrate, Bromide, hydrogen phosphate, and nitrite. In the Dionex system, the analytical column is used to separate the different anions present in the sample. The column contains small beads functionalized with positively charged tetrabutylammonium cations that interact with the anions present in solution. The stronger the interaction between the anion and the tetrabutylammonium group, the slower the anions move through the column, thus separation is achieved. The separation is achieved by relatively weak physical interactions between the column and the anions, with the retention time determined by their valency, size, and polarizability. With reference to the interactions that occur on the analytical column, explain why pure deionized water cannot be used as the eluent. Instead, carbonate/bicarbonate is added to the deionized water to make up the eluent.
